Forrester urges firms to go mobile - but what about consumers?

In its report “How Mobile Handsets Will Deliver 24x7 Social Computing” Forrester Research is encouraging companies to harness the power of mobile phones in order to communicate and stay connected with their customers.

But when we look at the security aspect, users of mobile phones may be vulnerable….

More and more companies let their employees use their smartphones and mobile phones for business purposes, but it's not common for companies to extend their security envelope around an employee's mobile phone, which they should.

Forrestor’s Ian Fogg mentioned on his blog:

"People are becoming connected 24x7 through their internet phones and that must transform the strategies that firms adopt.”

“Mobile enables a 24x7 relationship between brands and consumers. Mobile enables people to interact with websites 24x7, both to consume, read and browse, and to contribute. Mobile opens up new business models through the fusion of location awareness and a 24x7 internet-connected device,"

Mobile malware is not new and will quite likely increase due to the growing number of mobile phone users. A recent example is the Transmitter C malware that randomly sends text messages to around 500 mobile numbers on the mobile phone's contact list, and redirecting the infected phones to an unsecured web portal. Upon execution, the malware attempts to automatically spread by texting hundreds of messages linking to a website where a copy of the malware (sexySpace.sisx) is stored.

In conclusion, mobile malware is here to stay. The solutions to protect users, especially in the consumer sector, are, we think, more than a little lacking.
